Repair or replace? Assessing a damaged timber floor
What to consider when scratches, movement or damaged boards appear.

A damaged floor does not always need to be replaced. Localised wear, scratches and individual damaged boards may be repairable, depending on the floor’s construction and condition.
Find the cause first
Water exposure, movement and loose fixings can create similar-looking problems. Before cosmetic repairs begin, the underlying cause needs to be identified and addressed. Active leaks and unsafe boards should be assessed promptly.
Match the existing floor
Replacement boards should be selected for species, dimensions and profile. Colour differences may remain because older timber and finishes change over time. A site assessment helps establish realistic expectations for the repair.
